Success story · Mark · United States

Made redundant in a pandemic, Mark rebuilt his working life on his own terms.

An aviation executive, made redundant and repatriated overnight. He arrived anxious and wanting to escape corporate altogether. He left with his confidence back, real clarity, and a working life he chose: a corporate path he leads with his strengths, and the side hustle he had always wanted.

The transformation

Made redundant and lost, to reinvented on his own terms.

Where he started

Disconnected. Made redundant, anxious, lost, unsure he had anything left to offer.

Where he is now

Reinvented. Clear on his direction, leading with his natural genius, in control of his emotions, with a corporate path and a portfolio income he runs himself.

Where he was

The worst possible moment to be asked who you are.

Mark came to me at the worst possible moment to be asked who you are. The pandemic had hit aviation harder than almost any industry, and his role went with it. An expat in Singapore one month, repatriated to the US the next, and suddenly responsible for working out how he was going to provide for his family. In his words, "a difficult time, with a lot of anxiety and a lot of stress, trying to figure out what I was going to do."

A friend sent him my way. He was honest about his scepticism: "I don't even know if I have a natural genius, but okay, let's give it a try." He was not done. He just could not see it yet.

How it changed

Reconnect, reimagine, reposition, reinvent.

01

Reconnect

Disconnected → Aligned

We did not start with his CV. We started with him, because you cannot rebuild on ground you have stopped trusting. He puts it better than I could: "She knows how to ask the right questions and draw out the natural genius from me. I gained an incredible amount of self-awareness." That did something bigger than point him at a job. It gave him back control. "I've been able to take better control of my emotions and operate from a place of strength rather than weakness." This is the part most people skip, and the part that matters most. Mark stopped reacting to the disruption and started meeting it from solid ground.

02

Reimagine

Uncertain → Clear

From there we could look at what came next without the panic. The interesting turn was this: at the start, Mark wanted to run from the corporate world. Once he was clear on his strengths, he saw it differently. He realised he was genuinely well suited to it, and could lead with what he is best at rather than escape it. We built a direction with contingencies for the roadblocks, so clarity came with a route, not just a feeling.

03

Reposition

Overlooked → Valued

Being capable and being seen as capable are two different things. Mark got the language for the value he brings, and named his natural genius plainly: "my ability to build bridges across different organisations and cultures, connecting people with one another, and creating solutions that others may not have seen." That is what he leads with now, and it is far more compelling than a job title.

04

Reinvent

Stuck → Thriving

Mark did not just find a job. He redefined his working life. He has clarity on his corporate direction, and he has started the day-trading side hustle he had always wanted, which his hard-won self-awareness makes him better at. Employment and a portfolio, on his terms. He came in unemployed and anxious. He came out operating from strength, an asset to himself and to the people around him. As he says it: "the best investment you can make is an investment in yourself."
